    How'd you mount it to the stone/brick? I just built a mantel similar to yours and am going through some troubles getting it mounted securely.

    It looks rugged from a distance, that you accomplished.

    Did you stain it or leave it natural with a poly on it ?

    You left the next home owner the option of adding fancy molding if so desired.

    Mantelpiece

    Last but not least for tonight, attached is a picture of an oak mantelpiece I built for our home, all decorated for last christmas.

    We wanted clean, heavy lines to complement the rugged look of the ledgestone fireplace surround. It is made of a combination of solid red oak and red oak ply to match our woodworking throughout the house.

    There is a mounting strip on the mantle, and another one lagged screwed to the wall. The pieces interlock. I installed it before the stone surround was installed. The grout for the stone also helped to anchor it in.
