    lathe accessory request

I'm looking for a jacobs chuck to fit the 3/4"x10 tpi threaded shaft on my Central Machinery lathe. Can anyone help?

    RE: lathe accessory request

    Welcome to the forum!

You likely get more help up in the turning area.

However, I've never seen one that big that is threaded. Once they get that big they are spec'd by a tper size (usually JT#6 or something, JT being Jacob's taper). If the 3/4" shaft on your lathe is hollow, it's likely a Morse taper #1 or #2, more likely a #2. You can readily buy a MT #2 Jacobs chuck from most good tool stores, Sears or Grizzly.

    Hope that helps!

I agree with Mark. That lathe takes a #2 morse taper, and you can get a collet chuck for around $40 from Woodcraft.
I am looking at upgrading to that lathe (I have an older, tube style Craftsman). For $179 I can get the cast iron swivel head model from the local HF outlet. What do you think of the lathe?

Try http://www.jlindustrial.com or 800-521-9520. I went to a machine shop to have a special adapter made for a drill press and this guy pulled out an J and L catalog. They turned out cheaper than his labor rate. They have all kinds of morse tapers, chucks, etc. for lathes, Mostly metal working but who knows.

    RE: lathe accessory request

My first lathe was a Central Machinery with the 3/4-10 thread.
It is very hard to find anything that fits.

However, I found that the thread size is a very common one for
threaded rods and bolts. Here is what I did:

I bought a rod coupler, and a short bolt of that size. Cut a
piece from the threaded end of the bolt, and used JB Weld to
plug one end of the coupler. The end of the coupler needs to
seat all the way against the spindle.

Then right on the lathe I drilled a hole and tapped 3/8" FINE
thread. This matches the thread in a threaded Jacobs chuck,
the ones used in electric drills. Cut the head off a bolt
with that thread, and threaded it in both the chuck and adaptor.

You can get a chuck with a #2 Morse at HF for about $10, and
mount it in the tailstock to drill the adaptor. Anyway, in my
opinion it is good to have a tailstock chuck anyway. It allows
you to drill in the lathe, and also use Forstner bits in it.

    Hope this helps.

Um... I'm afraid that's probably a MT#1 instead of a #2... if it's got a Morse taper at all. You see, a MT#2 is 0.700" at the big end and that just won't leave enough meat for the threads.

I kinda' like the adaptor from 3/4"-10 to 3/8"-20. That, I think, solves the problem very nicely. You could use fine-thread AllThred in it, too... and instead of an epoxy you could thread another NC 3/4" bolt backwards into the empty end of the coupler, cut it off, & then drill & tap into that. Steel all the way through. Maybe LokTite the stub bolt adaptor in place inside the coupler.
