The only issue I have with the tool is that it takes a few mins to convert from one to the other. The thickness table raises up to the cutter and it has about a 10 inch capacity under the blade. The normal 1 inch from the cutters means to flip the dust shoot to the other mode requires lowering the thickness table to the bottom. Lots of turning to get it down.
But it uses disposable blades and works very well.

Poplar is okay if they are to be painted. If not, or stained, I would not choose poplar. It is soft, uninteresting and does not finish well (unless painted). Oak or maple are not that much more...
