    Jaguar's Ear?

Has anyone ever heard of the wood called 'Jaguar's Ear'. If so, can you tell me anything about it?

That's a completely new one to me - and I can't find any reference to it anywhere on the Internet. Where did you hear about it?

    By the way - I'm really tickled by that username - that's GREAT! :) :) :)

    RE: Jaguar's Ear?

Someone on a guitar builders/players forum has a guitar made of Jaguar's Ear. I found a site of jewellery box looking things with some pieces made of Jaguar's Ear, but thats all.

I like my username too. I build musical instruments as a hobby, so I am sort of a luthier.

That's on my list of "stuff to do in the future"... I've got a few stringed instruments in my head & noplace to buy 'em - gotta build 'em my own darned self. :)

I'd like to see this wood, can you post the links to some photos? Maybe someone will recognize the wood from a pic...

Here is a link to the picture of the guitar made of Jaguar's Ear:

Some of us on the guitar builder/player forum have a suspicion it is a Mahogany.

    RE: Jaguar's Ear?

Hmmm... that looks a whole lot like the sides of my Washburn 6-string. It's a pretty nondescript wood, could be sapele or some sort of may-hog. I don't think I'd try very hard to find that exact same species of wood - it may look good & sound great, but so do a bunch of other easier-to-find woods. I wonder how koa would work for a 4-string mandolin? For an 8-string (double-strung, 4 courses)dreadnaught guitar? For a 5-string Mexican bass? Some day, some day...

I tend to agree with Tim on this one. It looks like one of the hundreds of imported woods that are all related to mahagany. Same kind of grain patern. It is nice looking but not real unique.
