    Yo Sonny & Keystone

Sonny and Keystone, I truly respect your views on the minimal need to "Ground" dust collection systems, but OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Here goes the story;

I was kicken back watchen the boob tube when I hear my wife laughing and joking with our newborn in the hallway (third child 1st is 15, 2nd is 12 and now this one, another long story, simply put, Tequila makes babyies). Anyway, I went to see what they were doing. My wife put one of them bouncer things that hangs from a door jam up in the restroom door and was playing with the baby. I looked at the set up and said, this won't do. Since we do not have any doorways in the family room to hang the jumper, I decided to quickly fabricate a cleat that I could mount on the ceiling to hang the jumper from.

I went to the shop, and started making my cleat. All was going well, cuttin wood on the Uni and very little dust in site all goin to the DC. Great stuff!!

Well, my DC is next to the Uni. The Unifence rail is touching the inlet pipe to the DC.

After I had cut a couple boards, I went to turn off the DC, the fence on the Unifence was sticking out a bit as I walked to the DC. To make a long story short, I got ZAPPED in the peepee (Literally). DAMN THAT SUCKED. I heard the POP of the discharge and I bounced off my garage door.

It's funny now, but I don't think I need to be Neutered now. I think my pubes went straight....

By the way the cleat works great and my son loves it...

Uh, you may be due for a change in shop layout. Birth control is important for some, but that's *not* a good way to go about it. :) Also, you may be able to minimize future shocks by making sure that all grounded equipment is grounded at one and only one point in your shop.

In all seriousness, get yourself to the doctor and take it easy for a day or so. Heart attacks due to shock are no fun.

Now that I've had some time to stop laughing so hard........

Like Sonny said. I think that the DC sort of "finds itself" so to speak. I've been running mine since September of '02. I was getting zapped all the time at first. It slowly stopped. Haven't gotten zapped in so long now, think maybe January was the last time.

Anywho, move your saw away from that pipe!

    Sonny,

I've taken 120VAC 7 times in my life. The last one was two years ago. I dropped my favorite screwdriver behind the washing machine. (It was 10:30pm, I had been awake since 6:00am and had to be awake at 6:00am the next day, and the wife *had* to have something done "right now"...)

Anyway, I found out the hard way that the receptacle in which the washer was plugged wasn't wired right. The rear frame of the washer, which was supposed to be at ground, was live. I reached to retrieve my screwdriver and bam. My right arm hurt for a good while. Fortunately no heart attack.

What really hurt was instead of proper care to prevent a heart attack, I got a lecture for about 15 mintutes.... Yeah, it was my fault that I didn't check the outlet and so forth, but there's a time and place for lectures...

    Matt,
On a serious note, 120 volts kills more folks every year than any other voltage. Because it's so previlent in out homes and lives.

Now in the trade, it's 480 volts that kills more electricians, because it won't let go.

    Glad you came out OK.
(Well, OK... at least as "normal" as is normal for you, anyhow.)
