5 of my latest projects (pics)

Ok, I guess I'll post a few of my latest projects although it's been a few months since I completed the last one (TV Stand).

We'll start with the most simple project.

First up, PULL PUPPY (No PLANS)
Wanted to make something for my Nephew's 2nd b-day so I came up with this. All painted MDF, with red oak wheels and dowels, pinned with toothpicks. I later attached a VERY short string for pulling. (Yes, I even painted it myself. I'm still very proud of the "puppy dog" eye. Every woman that sees it, goes "awwwwwwww")

Next up is a display case for fire department badges. (NO PLANS)
A friend of my has a history of fireman in his family and has
old fire department badges dating back to the early 1900's.

I don't remember the dimension of the case. It has several lapels inside for pinning the badges to. I finished the case with a stain&poly all in one coat. I let it dry for about an hour and then took a propane torch to it to give a burn look. I then wiped all the finished off with thinner and then coated it with a satin poly. the picture does it no just, but with the burn look and then poly over that....to sum it up, a firefighter looked at it and said "I've seen many things look like that, but never seen it captured in time so that you can actually touch it. It looks like it should be smoldering."

I think everyone can see what the next project is. (PLANS: WOOD MAGAZINE. I did change a few things, lengthen back and seat, added the Texas on the back.)
Adirondack chair. It now sits on my pier by my pond you see in the background. Oh man!, kicked back in that during the late evening, watching the catfish eat, sipping my ice tea... not many things better than that. NOTE: I entered this in the WOOD Magazine online outdoor furniture contest. I didn't win, but I did receive over 100 votes!

1:24 Nascar Display Case. (NO PLANS)
Again, a friend of mine wanted a display case for his EXPENSIVE 1:24 scale nascar's. He wanted it be like furniture, not the cheap acrylic cases you find for displaying model cars. So I built this. The shelves are angled 15 degrees, and if you'll look real close you'll see I made the glass slide up for installing the cars(pic1). Then when you slide it down it disappears into the case to look as if front is one(pic2).

And finally we have my most recent build. (NO PLANS)
    A Widescreen TV stand.

I bought a 42" RCA widescreen TV on clearance at B.B.'s.
I wanted a stand for it but after seeing they wanted $200 for some cheapo stand I decided to build one. It's made of knotty pine (always wanted to build something of knotty pine, since I wanted to keep the cost down I thought this would be the perfect project for it)
I mixed two stains together to get this color (colonial maple, and mahogany). I then put 4 coats of satin poly on it.

I wanted something with a little bit of colonial (the columns) and a rustic (knotty pine) look all rolled into one. I'm not sure if I achieved that look, but a lot of people ask me where I "bought it"!
LOL, I guess when you are asked where you bought something you built, that would be the ultimate compliment? yes?, no?

Well, there you have it, a few of my lastest projects. Some are simple, some are a little advanced. Hope you enjoyed looking at them.
    I sure enjoyed making them.

I'll post pics of a backgammon board I am in the middle of making as soon as I'm done.

I guess that is a compliment. Most places you would but a tv stand like that would not have anything built that well. Looks very nice... all of them do for that matter. You have been a busy guy.

Is that all that it takes for a woman to go AWWWW.

Sheesh, I've been doing it all wrong! :)

Looks like you're on your way to the Advanced stuff.

Try making radiused cabinetry with radiused doors, drawer fronts, etc. Now that's more of a challange.

The most difficult cabinetry to make is Cone Shaped.

For those of you who are unsure of what I mean:

Cone Shaped= Raidused cabinetry that angles back at the same time.

Imagine that being a radiused cabinet. "Think Reception Desk"

    Hey Brad nice work.
I especially like the TV stand..the subtle shaping on the edges really give it a nice "kick"

I might just have to steal that }> }>

Very nice work, Brad. I've done a couple of the original "adirondac settee" from the plans in Wood a couple three years ago. Same design as the chair, but with two seats and a little table between them. First one I did with the pine tree motif in the backs. The other I did for my son-in-law, who is a big UT Longhorn fan, with Longhorn cutouts in the backs, and I found some cast metal longhorn appliques at a mom and pop hardware store close to my house which I mounted in place of the duck. That one I did with Cypress

I've gotta make some more of those as the first one I made in pine and even with paint and a spar varnish, the sun and rain did it in. Also have a couple of the SIL's friends who want longhorn ones.

Steal away! I'll even tell you how I made them and maybe you can improve on the way I made them.

At first I was going to make the columns out of ONE soild piece, I soon realized that wasn't gonna happen!

    Instead I did this... I ripped 20 3ft long 1/2 stripes.
Cut all pieces down to 2ft and used the left over ft. for the bottom columns. I then used a 1/4 roundover bit and rounded over one edge of all the stripes. I then took them all to the table saw and tilted the blade 9 degrees and put a 9 degree cut on one side of each board.

I then started gluing and nailed the boards together making sure I put a 9 degree cut next to 90. If you don't do this, and put two 9 degree cut together you'll end up with a 18 degree at that joint instead of a 9 degree, that'll kind mess things up... anyway

Once you glue all 10 piece together you'll end up with a 90, or a 1/4 of a column.
I then made some half moon piece and glued and nailed them at the top and bottom on the inside of the columns for mounting brackets.

You ran 1/2" stripes down the table saw to add a 9 degree angle on one side? I'm not sure I'd want to do that, even with a push stick, but I'm wimp too.

I think I might have tried a 4.5 deg angle during the rip, flipping the board every pass (to not end up with parallelogram). Hm. but that'd make the routing kinda hard. Darn it.

Hey Brad, you really nailed the design on that TV stand. :)

I like stuff in pine though, so I am just slightly prejudiced.

Good stuff and thanks for sharing the pics with us.

It was a bit nerve racking but there is a trick to doing this fairly safe. Two fences, two fences? yes, two fences. Your normal fence, and an second one (made of wood) clamped over the blade. Of course you have a relief cut for the blade to fit up in. It takes no time getting lined up, just clamp your temporary wood fence down square to your regular fence making sure you have enough height for cutting the angle, then drop your 1/2 stripe of wood between the two fences and lock your fence making sure the wood slides fairly easy between the two. Now it's just a matter of sliding the board between the 1/2 gap. Also a couple of feather boards in stratigic locations.

Way cool, Brad. Those are some nice projects. I especially like the sliding glas front on the dispaly case, now that's cool. I have some orders for some shadowboxes, I might have to ste.. I meant, uh.. borrow that idea.

Good work on all of them.

It doesn't really matter how much you're doing, if what you're doing doesn't really matter.
