Jerrys post made me think of the days....

.... when I didn't have enough money at all.... and the trips I would take to Mammoth Mountain to go skiing....

6 of us who played beach volleyball together in So Cal would pile into my Ford F250, piled with blankets and ice chests and skiis and boots etc... with 3 in the back hunkered down so the law wouldn't see them.... we would drive to wherever they were having a promotion and get discount lift tickets and drive the 7 hours to Mammoth. We would have to rotate who was sitting in the back when hypothermia became an issue :)

6 of us would go to the Motel 6, and only 2 would check in... the others hid in the truck... then we'd unload and settle in... sorta... Bologna sandwiches or Tuna sandwiches were the fare, and we also brought the Nintendo with the "Pro Beach Volleyball" game... we couldn't afford to go out anywhere, so we had tournaments in the room when we were done skiing for the day.... picture lots of screaming and cheering as the people in the next room must have surely wondered what the heck was going on ... we always went to sleep early... skiing all day will do that to ya :)

We knew one of the instructors, and he would let us sign up for the beginner package... unless we had good promotional discount tickets... they had a promotional deal that got you 3 days of lift tickets for $55 and 3 days of lessons for $75... since we didn't want lessons he would have to do some shady stuff to get us lift tickets... something about the "lessons were guaranteed" and we needed more help :)

So, about $15 each for gas, $55 for lift tickets, $10 each for the room, about $20 for food and drink... $100 3 day skiing weekend...

Man, we had so much fun doing that.... so broke, but so happy :)

    Good memories....

    Y'all got any like that?

Growing up in a war torn country, most of my fun trips were similar. Getting by with the tiniest amount of money. Roughing it out 99.9% of the time and later cherish every single moments. As a matter of fact some of those friends died during the war so those trips comprise most of the memory I have from them.

Yes I agree the good old days were fun and the memories are bountiful and plentiful,,,,the things we did to make fun and entertainment, I better not say some of the off color episodes or they would be coming after me. I'll go one step further and say we did not have indoor plumbing, electricity or gas until I was 13 years old. I doubt if todays youngsters would have survived.

Chamber Pots, coal oil lanterns, cow milking, and feeding of the chickens, ducks and pigs all to the tune of cold, darkness and the elements. This all would have to be done before and after school of which was a 2 mile walk one way.

I wouldn't use the old chamber pot( cause then you had to go dump it the next morn) but I always got caught because my method rusted out the screens and turned the snow yellow. rotflmao

And I'll bet it was uphill both ways. :P :P

RE: Jerrys post made me think of the days....

I stayed in the provinces (in asia) before I turned 6...and we neither have indoor plumbing nor electricity. Most of the entertainment I have was playing with spiders, hunting birds, playing with cars made of tin cans, and my daily stroll to the jungle...alone most of the times with my trusted "bolo" (like a jungle knife only heavier made from wheel springs) and a sling shot. Sometimes I leave in the morning with just that and come home after sunset...with a shirt full of goodies (one end is tied to make a sack)...fruits, root crops, fish, frogs (yes I eat those)...whatever is in season. I survive on my own...eating whatever is available and drinking on the river streams. Again, that was when I was less than 6...I moved to the city at 6 to start my "education."

At night, all we have is a "crackling" transistor radio...listening to some programs but imagination fills all the rest and they are (I think) more fun than watching TV.

BTW...that probably explains why there are 12 of us :D...(6 boys and 6 girls).

    Fun days.

    Dario :)
