Sometimes ya just dont kno why

A newly wed couple was hosting their first Easter dinner for the wifes family. After watching his new wife Joan slice an inch off of each end of the Easter ham, Bob, the husband asks, "So why do you cut off each end of the ham?" Joan replies "Well, thats how my mother always did it."

Some time later, Joan's mother Mary arrives and the husband says to her, "I was watching Joan prepare the ham and she cut an inch from each end. When I asked her why she did that, she said it was because you always did. So tell me, why do you cut off each end of the ham?" To which Mary replies, "Well, thats how my mother always did it."

Seeing that grandma has already arrived Bob heads across the room to where grandma is, knowing this is his last chance to get to the bottom of this "cutting" question. Bob explains to grandma that he watched Joan cut off the ends of the ham and that she said she does it because her mother did it that way, and Mary said she cut off the ends because you did it that way.

"So tell me" says Bob, "why do you cut an inch off each end of the ham?" Grandma replies, "Well, my pan was too short".

RE: Sometimes ya just dont kno why

I've met people who gives me this reasoning, "I've been doing this for 20 years!"

To which I reply, "Doing something WRONG for 20 years doesn't make it right" ;)

RE: Sometimes ya just dont kno why

My grandfather, whom I love dearly, has so many little rules and traditions. Ever since I was a kid, I've always been inquisitive and asked "why" about everything. My wife says that when we have a child, we'll know if it takes after me if it's first word is "why?". Anywho, I used to get frustrated with my grandfather because I would be generally interested in why he did or didn't do certain things (because he's my hero) and he would get frustrated and instead of explaining why, he'd just tell me to "trust" him or "believe" him, as though by asking him "why", I was questioning him as a person, grandfather, etc. I now realize he's a man of routine and orderliness, as many were from that generation, and that he didn't need to know "why" so long as whatever it was he was told solved the problem at hand. We butted heads quite a bit about this kind of stuff when I lived with him (he had his hip replaced after my Nana died), but now I find it very endearing and lovingly bust his chops about it.

I still plant my vegetable garden the same way my grandfather did. Doesn't matter to me if there are other or even better ways to grow beans or peas.

That's a great story. There is usually a good practical reason for everything, the hard part is finding someone who actully knows what it is.
