Dickie you are a "trip" do ya'know that?
Well the bottom line is that I need a new puter..I know that.
However any additional expense right at the minute munches into the survival fund.
Thanks to some really generous offers..both here on the board and many private messages and e-mails it looks like I may be able to preserve the status quo with my existing set up for very little expense.
To all those who contacted me, can I say a huge thank you and will try to respond individually to your kind offers...please don't feel affronted if I don't take you all up..I only need one working system :)
I'm amazed at the time and efort everybody has put in to helping me and although it's starting to get uncomfortable sitting here waiting for stuff to load with crossed fingers I am still able to communicate and with a slight hiatus while I send off bits for innoculation it does seem that I can stave off "buying" a new system until I can plan the purchase and investigate a few leads such as Rob Hulls refurbished center just up the road in Westchester.
Once again thank you everyone ..what a group !!

Limey,
The amount of offers and help you got reflects who you are :).
In a way it is our small way of showing our appreciation for all the advise, help, and wisdom you shared over the years.
In other words, we need you here and I think it is in our best interest that you get a reliable system...can't let you out the hook that way!!! }> LOL

Hey! He lives about six miles from me! We've got a computer help program on our local radio station. A few years ago, when someone called in with a really dumb question, they got inducted into the Box of Rocks Club. Now, when that happens they get a shirt that says "Box of Rocks" on it. One woman has even earned stars to add to her shirt. The original host of the show (he now has a really computer sharp female co-host) is called Father Rock. :)

I was just going to say something much like that, Dario. Heck, the forum can't afford to not have Limey...

Limey,
It comes as no surprise to me that you find yourself on the receiving end of such generosity . . . in the relatively short time that I've known you, you've been exceedingly generous with your time, wit and wisdom - and I know that many of us here place a high value on that.

Always keep it in mind, Limester, that windows is only software like anything else you run on the computer, and not the computer itself, and hence those error messages need to be taken with a collosal grain of salt.
I wouldn't trust any drive error messages from a win98 box :D
If you remember the messages I sent you a while back, most of your problems seem to be due to a messy and very old windows install.
Like most things, they get swollen with age and need replacing for new parts :D
Oh I did have one other thought, in case you did want to switch drives anyway.
A local recovery service might charge you pennies for copying one drive to another if you supply both drives. It's not as if your drive has failed (yet) so it could be worth calling a few up.
Then all you'd need to do is plug in the new and improved drive and away you go like normal.
Rob.
