Cleaning table saw blades?
Hi folks,
Can someone recommend a product for cleaning the pitch and other gunk from table saw blades? I heard David Marks recommend something but didn't write it down.
Thanks,

Lotsa' folks use oven cleaner, too. I don't, 'cause I'm a little paranoid about the caustics corroding the brazing on the teeth... but other folks seem to get by that way just fine.

RE: Cleaning table saw blades?
Easy off Oven Cleaner here.... no qualms about corrosion... I leave it on for literally a few minutes and rinse off.
I believe Systematic actually recommend oven cleaner while Freud strongly advise against.
It's a subject that will always spark controversy and you are either in one camp or the other.
Simply green works.... just a lot slower.. but time is immaterial if you leave 'em in soak overnight.
Whatever...a clean blade will perform better and be safer than one which binds and bogs down halfway through a cut.
I "try" to discipline myself to clean blades and router bits, shaper cutters before they get to the stage that I notice a drop in performance... emphasis on "try"

I've used both Simple Green and oven cleaner. Had good results with both but I prefer Simple Green, its easier to use and smells better IMHO. If the gunk is built up I use a toothbrush to remove it (besides cleaning the teeth of the saw blade, it also does a good job on your own if if forget which toothbrush you used, HA HA).

If I'm in a hurry I use over cleaner. If not, I soak 'em in hot water for about an hour and scrub 'em off.

RE: Cleaning table saw blades?
I asked the guy who does my sharpening (and nearly everyone elses) what he uses and he said "Oven cleaner." I asked if about the brazing being weakened and he said that it has never been a problem. This is a man who has been sharpening in this area for 30+ years. I'm willing to take his word for it until shown decidedly otherwise. The down side is that oven cleaner is NASTY stuff and you should keep your safety glasses on (wouldnt be a bad idea to have a face shield too) and heavy chemical resistant gloves.
Have any of you seen that show on Discovery "Mythbusters"? Maybe this would be one of the questions they could put to rest. Like they did with the cell phone causing a spark and igniting fumes at the gas pump. This may be a question that 99% of the viewing audience has never asked themselves, so it probably wouldnt make for good tv, except for ww geeks like me.
