oh, deer
This is an actual letter to the editor in a Staten Island newspaper. I am guessing that somebody with the last name Spero is telling him to shut up about now :-)

JOHN G. O'LEARY WEST BRIGHTON The writer is a partner in the law firm of O'Leary, McMahon & Spero.
This is an open letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg with regard to the Staten Island Advance article of Oct. 28, "Fatal encounter for deer on Hylan."
What I cannot believe is the insensitivity of the police, who stated they would not pursue him or her, the driver of the pickup who murdered a poor, innocent 2-year-old buck who was scared and confused. The person driving the pickup didn't even stop. There has got to be blood on his pickup and probably body damage.
To me, this is a hit-and-run resulting in the death of an innocent animal. The person that did this knows what he or she did. Are they stupid? Have they no guilt or were they too busy on the cell phone? How could they not notice a deer in the middle of the road?

RE: oh, deer
Being treated as an accident, the police view this incident as non-criminal. If it could be proven that the driver went out of their way to hit the deer, it would turn into a criminal case. As for stopping, I feel that the driver should have stopped and called for help to at least try to help the deer. The driver may not have realized that a deer was struck, or maybe the driver did stop and there was nothing that could be done. Signs should be posted for the protection of the animals and the drivers.
I don't see anything wrong with the letter. I'd be surprised if Spero didn't support his partner. Hit and run is hit and run. That driver probably wouldn't stop even if the victim was a person.

RE: oh, deer
The bottom line is, are we saying it's OK to kill an animal and speed off? Animals deserve the same respect.
That's idiotic. Giving animals the same consideration as humans is utterly ridiculous IMNSHO. The person who wrote that letter probably dotes on his dog and beats his wife.
Those type people are akin to the ones in the Northwest who are driving loggers to the poorhouse while protecting spotted hoot owls nobody but them cares about.
I don't hunt and I don't believe in needlessly killing anything but hit & run does not apply to deer, nor should it.
Personally, though, I would have stopped...to cut off the antlers if it had any. Those antlers make nice pens. ;)

RE: oh, deer
FYI - Most insurance companies consider collisions with animals covered by the comprehensive section of the policy and NOT the collision section of the policy.

I, guess the person who wrote that letter, does not know how many lives of humans were killed by striking a galloping deer at 60mph,it is a lot of people, not to mention the injuries and millions of dollars in damage per year, that is why there is hunting to curb the amount of animals or we would be over run by them. Deer do not have insurance.
Therefore, deer have no business occupying the road.
Anybody who's priorities are for the animal getting hit on a roadway, and it's "rights", has got their head up their butt.
What about the screaming cow their steak was cut out of? Or the poor inocent head of cabbage so violently hacked from it's roots and chopped into pieces for their dinner?
Dorks!
I hit a deer in Wyoming once. I did stop. But it was to see if I could salvage any meat from it.
Nope. Pulverised! It was like a bag of sand.
Couple of hundred deer on each side that devided when they saw me coming. Except at the last moment Miss Dead Dumb decides to run across right in the path of my rig.
Damnedest case a deer suicide you ever saw!
No dought the eagles, vultures, and coyotes enjoyed the feast.
Talk about a blond moment! ;)

RE: oh, deer
I just thought it was funny when he said, "How could they not notice a deer in the middle of the road?" As if to imply that they are driving around trying to hit deer.
One of my best friends was almost killed on a motorcycle when he hit a deer. He did not even see it because it ran out of the ditch right in front of him. Another friend of mine spends his time rebuilding cars that hit deer here in iowa.
So I really doubt they are driving around like, "BUBBA! There's a buck! Swerve over and git em"

I agree, Brent.
And a Bro and his wife tangled with an elk in Northern California.
He came out of it OK. She got about a year and a half of rehab. She got all busted up. And the Harley, well, you can always fix a Harley back up. ;)
That law firm is the kind that Lawyer hate jokes are made of.

RE: oh, deer
Oh yeah, Elks is bad. We occasionally hear about Elk vs auto contests in the foothills, where the Elk and the motorist often both lose.
I won't try to hit a critter but I won't veer very far to miss them either. Some seem to lay in ambush by the side of the road and jump out at the last instant as if it were a game.

RE: oh, deer
Up here, its pretty frowned upon to not stop if you hit a deer and call police, not for the sake of the deer, but for the safety of others on the road. Hitting a dead deer isn't much better than hitting a live deer.
That and if there is any salvagable meat on the deer (most of the time, in these parts, there is, as the deer doesn't die by the car, it has to be shot by you or the police officer), its given to the homeless shelters, and the pelts given to the VFW's.
