Lowes Pine
Funny thing - I was at lowes the other day.
They had pine.
STRAIGHT
Not cupped
Not twisted
Nice and flat
NO knots
Nice grain patterns
Price -- ehh -- not horrible - around $3.50 a bd/ft.
I am sure this is extremely regional - like only this store.

RE: Lowes Pine
The pine at Lowes (around here) is typically far better than that available at HD. They are far more proud of it at Lowes than HD is, as well.

RE: Lowes Pine
There is a guy from Katy, TX who used to post a lot over at SMC until he took an IT job. He did some incredible woodworking, cabinetry and finish carpentry.
I remember that he built a shop cabinet from birds-eye pine that he got at the borgs. He would occassionally run across a piece and kept buying it up until he had enough for the cabinet. It was some really pretty stuff.
I've been intending to start looking myself in hopes of doing the same thing. Besides, I happen to like the look of Pine very much. :)

RE: Lowes Pine
This batch of pine I saw at Lowes was actually a very high premium grade.
I have a local source of pine that I consider a great source. Lowes stuff could definately be as good or better than the local saw mill.
Home Depot is on the other end of the spectrum. I will not say more other than it is great fire starter stuff, but not much more.
I am certain that a different HD in a different location will be be quite the opposite.
Also, Lowes had a real nice assortment of glued up pine panels, also all nicely done. If I needed a 36" wide pine glued up panel, I would not hesitate to buy one of them.
Soooo - from "me" - some nice words about the "borg". Quite a switch, eh?

RE: Lowes Pine
I took a look through a run of the mill hardware store in France on my vacation and was impressed by their selection of pine, particularly the 2"x2" stock, nice and straight. I couldn't help but think howfar you have to look to find that here.

Try checking any lumberyard up here...all our good lumber gets shipped down to you, so we end up with the no.3 common
Not griping or complaining, but I'd like to be able to pay extra for some Selects - they just don't carry them for some reason!

RE: Lowes Pine
Both Lowes and Home Depot sell top quality clear white pine in the St. Louis area for around $3 b/f. I used it for face frames, stiles and rails for some shop cabinets. Turned out pretty good.
