It's that time of the year, Sonny!

Put a pumpkin seed plastic crawdad on the fishin' pole today and walked down to the pond....I've only started fished for bass just last year when I started seeing bass activity. Up until today I've only put a crappie jig or something small thinking the if there were bass, they weren't very big seeing how I've not put any in it and the pond is only 8 to 10 years old. So today with the warm over-cast day (good bass fishing weather) I thought I'd really try and catch some...

In about a 20 minute span I caught two about 12-14" long in the 1.5lb range, missed 2 and then caught this dude below... He's about 16-18" long and about 2.5-3lbs. All this in a distanst of 75ft along one bank.

Spring is here...the fish and Mosquito's are biting, the trees are starting to bud and flowers blossom... not only did I see some honeysuckle blooming, I could smell it! We've got about 2 months of this kinda weather and then hell moves in for the next 6 months.

Needless to say...today was a great day!

    Nice catch.

We're snowed in again this weekend, my ice fishing trip even got canceled.

I thought something that size was just BAIT in Texas }>

That would be a trophy here in NM.

Ya know, looking at the pic, it does look small.... I do have very large fat hands, that doesn't help.

but yeah, it's just a baby around here.
I have tons of perch and shiners in the pond, so they should be in the 4 and 5 pound range in a few years. I'm still amazed the catfish have gotten so big in such a small pond (about 1/3 acre).

That looks good. They'll grow quick. I'm waiting for the fish to come back to the shallow here too. I think they are here already, just haven't had time to fish.

Perch and Shiners are Bass food!
They'll get big and fat quick eatin the other fish.
That's why Ol Bucketmouth has a bucket mouth, to inhale the other fishes.
Sounds like the pond is balancing itself just right.

Oh and bass are territorial. You go back to that same stretch of bank and you are libel to catch the same boogers over and over. (If you catch and release)
I know of a guy who had a "pet" bass he caught for several years. That MA-MOO kept gettin bigger and bigger. I stopped visiting that forum, so I don't know if that bass is still in that area. But it was supposedly in the twenty pound range last I heard of.
Huge fish! (for freshwater, around here)

20 pound bass? That's obviously a different species than we get up here...about 6 lbs is a monster...there sure are a lot of them though!

Those are striped bass, aren't they, Sonny?

We have two types - smallmouth bass, and largemouth bass...named for obvious reasons! :)

No, stripers are different altogether. And they get huge as well, but eat everything in the lake. Bad news.
Large Mouth bass. I think they are also known as Southern Bass, florida variety, or something like that.
We just call them Largemouth Bass.
The lake nearest to me is expected to, or has already produced the next world record LM bass. [link:www.castaiclake.com/ | Castaic Lake.]
I have to wonder though, it gets way to much pressure from fishing.
I haven't even bothered to go there for a couple of years now.
I'd rather go the 10 extra miles to troll for trout at [link:www.lake-piru.org/ | Piru].
But we've caught both LM and SM at the reever when we go there. (Second week in April will find us there with the Grand Kids this year.)

I'm surprised you would have any Bass up there in Canada. They are typically a warm climate sort of fish.

Bass survive in pretty much anything - they're the only fish I know that can live in the inch of water in the bottom of the boat...

We've got a ton of bass up here - the KBI (Kenora Bass INternational) is a huge international fishing tournament, and pretty fun to watch. Bob Izumi, etc. all come up for it every year.

What kind of trout do you get down there, Sonny? Brown trout and speckled, probably? We only have Lake trout up here, which are a DEEP, COLD lake sort of fish - about 200 feet down, many times - and not uncommon to get a monster! We have to use steel line and giant, unflexible rods...
