Where is HGTV when you need them?
I'm thinking, which is scarry at the best of times, that I need to do a shop make over. My problem is a total lack of even the most basic organizational skills.
Now I watch a bit of TV and I can't help notice how many of them "Home Make-Over" shows are on the air. I think it is time for one that deals with wood working shops. Wouldn't it be cool if Norm Abram or some one like that showed up at your door with a crew of shop designers and totally rebuilt your space (for free of course)? Then gave you a couple of top of the line tools to go in it?
Some one call the Networks I see a new hit series in the making!

There were a couple of shows that covered that. Both were on DIY. One was a weekly show discussing shop layouts and upgrades, as well as tool selection. The other ( a kinda Mini Series), which still runs from time to time, was a guy who built out like five different shops of varying size. Started with a shed, and ended on a huge stand alone monster that had tools for both wood and metal.

I have found that the most effective way for me to at least head toward something even remotely organized is to[ul][li]Put all the tools where I want them[li]Put everything that pertains to that tool near that tool, i.e. pushsticks near the tablesaw, turning tools near the lathe, etc[li]If there is nothing near a tool to hold those items, make one[li]Stop a project and switch to working on organization as soon as something bugs me... like walking clear across the shop for something using it, walking clear across the shop to put it away, then discovering I need it again....[li]Pegboard for items that get used all the time and you want to just be able to grab it[li]Cabinets for stuff that gets messed up sawdust[li]Drawers for tiny stuff[/ul]
..... and realizing that is a never ending job... like golf, you never win, just play :)

Heck, that's part of the fun of hobby woodworking. I get as much enjoyment out of building something for the shop as anything else. I like organization, too so adding cabinets and storage is fun for me.
