    Boy oh Boy Thank God!!!

We had a scare this morning that still has me all shook up. My 8 year old daughter Kylee had asthma when she was little but has not had an attack in 4 years now. Well this morning my wife was getting her ready for school. I could hear my daughter crying because her hair was tangled and it was hurting (not unusual, she hates getting her hair brushed). The next thing I know the wife is screaming that something is wrong. Kylee complained she was not feeling good then passed out on the floor. When I got in the bathroom she was on the floor, purple lips, white as a ghost. I tried to get her to respond but her eyes were rolled back in her head, body limp and she was 100% NOT BREATHING!!!! Not even trying to breathe!!!

I kinda blanked out at this point. Everything went silent and I had this feeling like I was floating. I picked her up and took her to the hall way where I would have some room. After shaking her around and moving her she began panting very fast but was still unable to breath. I grabbed my radio off the dresser and called for EMS. ( in case some of you don’t know, I am a police officer) it was a natural reaction to use the radio not the phone. Anyway during all this she was still not breathing. She was still panting but only one pant every 10 seconds or so. Unable to get air and still completely unresponsive. I don’t know for sure this was the right thing to do or not but, I gave her two small rescue breaths. Then she began taking shallow breaths for a few moments then the panting came back but really fast now. The wife got her inhaler but she was still not responsive. I began pumping the inhaler in her face while my wife got the nebulizer hooked up. Before the wife got the machine going Kylee started to come around. All of the sudden her eyes opened she was breathing deep and her color immediately came back. By the time EMS arrived we had the nebulizer mask on her and she was fine. EMS checked her vitals and everything was normal but her heart rate was high because of the albuterol.

Kylee only remembers being in the bathroom then waking up in the hall.

As I type this the wife is at the Dr. Office with her. When Kylee was younger she was hospitalized several times because of Asthma but like I said it has been 4 years and she never had one this bad to the point where she passed out and stopped breathing. Not sure but my guess is it was brought on by the excitement kinda like a panic attack or something.

Anyway it has been a rough morning for me. Tried to get it off my mind by responding to some other posts but couldn’t stop thinking about it so I thought I would share.

Sure makes you think about how fragile life is.

Gives me chills, man. My three daughters are all adults, but I'll definitely give them each a big hug the next time I see them.

Had your wife and daughter used any hair spray or something that she would have inhaled? If so, I think I would pitch it.

    Man, that is crazy scarey.

Glad it came out ok so far. Had her asthma attacks come on any where near as suddenly as this before?

    Thanks Jerry,

No, she never really had the classic type attacks. She would start wheezing real bad but never had one because of running and playing.

    Ohhhh - that is scarey

everything else in life becomes pale in comparison to something like that.

One time when Michelle was about 3-4 years old, we were at Burger King. We were getting ready to leave when all of a sudden Michelle was GONE. We looked everywhere. In the car - all around the building - in the girls room - in the boys room. She was GONE. In the blink of an eye - GONE.

Finally Diane went into the girls room and called out her name - Michelle answered from a closed stall. Her legs did not reach the floor.

Over the years with Michelle and Shawn - we had life scaring stories. Shawn in convulsions - Michelle bleeding head after crashing her bike. Shawn falling off the couch and smashing his head on the radiator. Shawn getting a toy jammed in his throat and choaking.

This all makes parents old and gray.

Shawn is now 28 and Michelle 30 - both married.

Diane and I no longer have the stamina or patience for child rearing.

Truly - I do feel for you - our children do mean a lot to us.

That brought back some of my memories of being an EMT.

Distract like crazy - give your body plenty time to reabsorb all that adrenalin. Tastes awful & screws up your judgment in other stuff.

Good thing Kylee pulled out of it on her own - that's a VERY good sign. You might want to get her checked for latent epilepsy.

    Wow Shane,

That's scary just reading about it. There can't be anything worse for a parent than having one of your children in distress.

Glad she is okay and glad YOU are okay.

Yeah, this sounds more like a seizure than classic asthma symptoms.
