    Self Suficient?

It has been awhile since I last posted anything, but the events of the past few weeks has brought this to mind. Just wondering if others who enjoy working with their hands agree with the following...

    ********
Show me a people who -
Grow and cook their own food.
    Make their own clothes.
    Build their own homes.
    Produce their own fuel.
    Manufacture all they consume.
    Strive to be self sufficient.
Share their abundance with those in need.
    Believe in a God.
And I will show you a rich and mighty nation.

Show me a people who –
    Boast in their greatness.
    Will not accept responsibility.
    Insist on entitlements.
    Demand instant gratification.
    Consume more than they create.
    Make government fix their problems.
Support the famous above the poor.
Turn against traditional and religious morals.
And I will show you a nation ripe for destruction.

Would that we, as a nation, were still in that first category.

Ben Franklin, or maybe one of his contemporaries of similar renown, said something along the following lines; that our republic would be fine until we realized that we could vote ourselves a benefit.

As an individual - I feel that "I" more closely align with the top, but I could be better.

As a nation - sadly - we look more like the bottom

    Uhhh - yes I agree

I first heard that from my 7th grade math teacher. She was a staunch conservative and was touting Ronald Reagan for president, even back then...and that was around 1965. Talk about the voice of one crying in the wilderness! Texas and the South were still firmly democratic back then although the Viet Nam war was starting to erode support for LBJ and the dems.

She was explaining to us (we always had about a 10 minute political discussion before taking up algebra) why a representative democracy would ultimately fail as a form of government...because as soon as the poplulace learned that they could vote people into office who would provide them something for nothing, the country would be doomed.

    Seems we are there.

It may appear to some that we are like the bottom, but thank whom ever, we are not. Carl

Was checking on the Gutenberg site just before reading this and discovered this book written in 1912 about the French system of democracy, "The Cult of Incompetence", could have been written today about most modern democracies:
