Has a physical a couple of weeks ago and the Dr called

yesterday. I'm doing fine, need to lose some weight, again. However I could tell there was something else. It appears that I have low B vitamin. I have to start taking shots next week for 3 weeks and then monthly afterwards for a while and told to take B-12 vitamins. I don't understand the vitamin part. It appears that my body is just not assemalating vitamin from the food I eat because I eat plenty of animal products, drink milk, chease etc. In fact my daughter told my wife to stop yelling at me for eating ice cream.
This made a lot of sense to me and my wife becasue for the past 9 months I have been so tired and worn out. It has been very difficult, I didn't know what was wrong with me. In fact when the Dr called, I was asleep on the couch. I had taken some time off to work on some projects and just did not have the energy to do anything.

Any one know anything about this type of thing.

I know that, with the gastric bypass surgery and the removal of part of the upper intestine for the malabsorption benefit comes the problem of not being to absorb vitamins and pain killers or most other pills too... and without the daily sublingual B-12 I take I totally run out of gas... I can't get it from food so I have to take them under the tongue every day.

I had never heard of people having some sort of condition that keeps them from absorbing vitamins through food... Doc Kerry can surely give us a clue on this...

Weird, my thought is that If I can't metabilize it from food, why am I taking the vitamins. It has been a tough year. There have been so many times when I just could not go on. I would go to my desk at work and hold my head in my hands trying not to go to sleep. Every day I come home and take a nap. My wife has been all over me about being lazy. Any way it was a bit of relief to get the call and hear that it might not be all my fault. I will see the Dr this week and ask some more questions.

I'm pretty positive that I've got a somewhat similar condition - I don't believe I absorb niacin (vitamin B-6) properly from my diet. It can happen, certainly.

The digestive system uses different digestive fluids to get different nutrients from food. It takes one fluid to get protein from meat, for example, but a very different fluid to get carbohydrate from wheat. If the body has trouble producing any of those types of fluid, digestion of that fluid's nutrient can suffer or become impossible.

If you're not getting the B vitamins from diet at ALL, then it doesn't make good sense to eat the vitamin pills. You may be getting a LITTLE from your diet, though - and if that's true, ya need to throw extra B vitamins into the diet; if you only digest, say, 20% of the B vitamins that enter your stomach, then if you put five times as much as normal in there you'll get 100% of what you need.

I'd say... if the doc has you eating vitamin pills, then you probably ARE still getting some little value from them, so it's worth doing to eat 'em.

When the LOML worked in the apartment business she had a boss who was an RN who occasionally consumed more than her share of adult beverage. Her hangover cure was injectable B12. Perked her right up.

Where would one go about getting some injectable B12? ;)
    Dave, from Indiana

I am a great believer in luck. The harder I work, the more of it I seem to have.

Personally, I don't know, but her being an RN she maybe knows a doc if it is a prescription thing, or maybe just go ask the pharmacist at Walgreen's if no Rx needed. I think I'd have to find another way, since sticking myself with needles is not something I would like to do.

Ask Roger Clemens. Isn't that what he claimed he was getting when his trainer shot up his butt?

    Everette,

If you have questions about your health or your doctor's instructions...even if you are just curious, I'd suggest you ask your doctor.

You will be much more likely to get accurate information from him than you will asking on a WW forum. ;)

The B-12 might not be a prescription medication, but I can guarantee that the syringe and needle will be controlled items. Check with your physician - might be just what the doctor ordered. Sorry - couldn't pass that up.
