Steps to Apply Tung Oil to Dining Table
Hi, I'm really hoping someone will be able to provide some guidance on the procedure I need to follow to add some tung oil to my dining table. About two years ago, we had a dining table made of American Walnut (not even sure about the type of wood). The maker applied tung oil prior to delivery and recommended we add tung oil every 6 months or so. Clearly we haven't been good about following the instructions until now and I'm completely lost on how to proceed. In the past, been careful about avoiding spills and would love to preserve the natural looking finish moving forward.
We purchased pure tung oil and steel wool grade #0000. How much sanding needs to take place - is it a light once over to remove surface dirt or should I be applying some elbow grease into it? I would appreciate any instruction, the more detail the better since I'm clueless.
Thanks in advance!

WELCOME TO THE FORUM
I would give the wood a good scrub with a synthetic microfiber pad, like white ScotchBrite, not steel wool. You could use a dry tack cloth...not one with a resinous feel. Wipe the wood with acetone.
Thin the first few applications of pure Tung oil 25% with mineral spirits (you can use odorless). Apply liberally with a clean lint free cloth. Wipe excess off after 10 minutes. Allow to dry...may take a day or two. After a few thinned applications, apply full strength with the same application regimen.
Maintenance can be periodic cleaning and oil applications.
