    Smile Watco Danish Oil

Does it actually have Tung Oil in it? Will it keep nails in the wood from rusting and bleeding through? Can I cover it with latex paint? Thanks.

I don't think the manufacturer will say what's in it. Trade secret. But it is a mix of drying oils, thinners, and resins---essentially a wiping varnish.

I would not trust it to completely prevent bleed-through of rust. If that is a serious concern for you, use galvanized or stainless.

Once cured (72 hrs. minimum) you can cover it with almost anything. Latex, no problem, but why are you using Watco if you're going to cover it with latex??? The beauty of Watco is the "natural" look it gives to wood. If you're covering with latex, you might as well use a primer instead.

I like using drying oils. There are a number of oils, and they all work in a similar way.

They do offer some protection - but none of them are as durable as Poly.

Shellac is a good sealer - particularly to cover over knots in Pine.

I agree though - if you are going to paint - don't use an oil, like Danish oil. Use a good primer.

A good primer will be far better than any oil.

Yes, once cured you can us just about anything on it. Using galvanized or stainless is a great idea. One thing to be aware of, depending on the wood species, is galvanized nails have a tendency to darken the area around the nail. Stainless nails will not do that, they are just extremely expensive.
If you make it, they will buy it so sell your wood works for free!
