How do you calculate the number of linear feet is required to cover a square foot?

I want to cover the flat ceiling of a 36x32 (1152 sq. ft.) cabin with T&G/V-Groove. The T&G is 1"x8" and sold in 8' and 10' lengths, for $2.00 per linear foot.
How do I determine the number of linear feet I need to cover the 1152 square feet?

Part of the calculations depend on which way you plan to run them, how you plan to run the joints between sections and whether you're going to stagger the joints, etc. The other fact is whether the 8" figure includes the tongue in the computation or not.

If yes, 3 boards wide will cover 2' wide area. If you're going the long way (36'), and not worrying about staggering the joints and the boards are actually 8" usable, then 108 linear feet will cover an area 2'x36'. To go 32' wide, then multiply it by 16. Reality is you'll have some waste and loss, how much depends on your plans so rough guess, figure at least 5%-10% waste. I'd guess at least 1800-1900 linear feet based on the numbers given and assumptions.

You really need to do your own calculations based on your planning, for me to guess and you buy based on that is not what you want to do. It's your money so work it out yourself to be sure.

    1 x 8 T&G, usually, will cover 7", so 1 LF will cover 7/12 sq. ft.

so 1152 sq. ft. will require (1152 x 12/7) about 1975 lineal feet, plus waste. Allow 10% waste. Order 2175 LF.
