Plans for a Display Case Needed...
All:
I just finished a volleyball tournament and was fortunate enough to win a medal. At my age, I feel lucky to just participate and play with some good friends and enjoy the camraderie of all the participants in these meets, but this time we actually won a medal.
It may not happen again so I'd like create a display case, probably no more than 6"x6"x1.5". Has anyone built anything similar that you can post a picture of it or if you might have some plans for. I would like to use a dark wood for background contrast. My artistic ability is rather limited, so any suggestions would be of great help, also. Thx.

RE: Plans for a Display Case Needed...
First off, I need to get this off my chest...
..... (ahem)

*sniff*... there, I feel better...
When I was woodworking for a living I lived near an Air Force base and this was one of my best seller... easy to make, and really shows off medals...

The back is 1/4" plywood with cork glued to it and the pretty cloth (from Wal Mart) stretched over it and glued to the back. I used plexiglass... cheap, easy to cut, and looked fine.
Real simple to modify the dimensions to meet whatever needs you have... make a smaller one with only one compartment for a single medal.... you can also make a box-like base with an angled front to attach a brass plaque.... lots of ways to make this work...
Here's an oak one....

... and mine... Walnut....

RE: Plans for a Display Case Needed...
i'm too lazy to build something so small (seeing as how it would probably take longer to take out my tools than to actually build the thing) so i'd just go to Aaron Brothers and buy me a shadow box frame. It'd probably cost you less than the materials to build anything anyway.
Of course that doesn't help you if you really want to build it yourself.
EDIT:
P.S. I play volleyball and coach the team for the school at which i teach (tried not to end with a preposition).
I'm pretty good if i do say so myself.

Uhhh....
Interesting advice.... see, this is a woodworking forum. We build things because we are not lazy and like to make things out of wood.
"Buy it at Aaron brothers" ??

RE: Plans for a Display Case Needed...
My wife is an English Teacher and smacks me whenever I end a sentence with a preposition. Living here in Texas for most of my life, that is a real tough thing to do. Just seems natural to say things like, "Where y'all from?" and the like. Reminds me of a joke.
An ol' gal from Texas was on an airplane sitting next to an apparently sophisticated eastern lady. Trying to be friendly and strike up a conversation, the gal from Texas turned to the other lady and asked, "Whar y'all from?"
The other lady, being none-too exhilirated by having to carry on a conversation with this obvious hick, replied coldly, "I'm from a place where we don't end our sentences with prepositions."
Non-plussed the old Texas gal asked, "Whar y'all from, b!tch?"

Yep, Why hell, I think I'll sell my Unisaw so I can buy some crud at Ikea, or maybe Walmart, or the Super K-mart.
Cheaper than Arron Brothers anyway......
Crap covered with paper pictures of wood.
Geeze Tom! }>
A medal like that represents accomplishment. It desires something special for it. :)

RE: Uhhh....
Tom:
Actually I would rather build it myself. I consider the learning experience to be as much fun as the doing part. Getting experience with joinery and uses/characteristics of different woods is something I need in order to progress further. Seeing 'David-in-Cairns' and several others projects being posted here has inspired me to improve myself and this project would be a step in that direction.
I also collect plates and have store-bought shadow box frames for them and am considering how to build an upgrade version to better show them off. They are 'alright' but I think I can do better.
SIDE NOTE: I was the unofficial coach of my ski club's beach volleyball team (during the off-season, the various ski clubs in the L.A. area sponsored a beach tournament that stretched over 4 months over the summer to keep everybody active until the snow started falling again). I was the coach because I was the only one who actually took classes and played in organized leagues/tournaments and had an inkling of what to do not because I had any actual talent in this area.
