RE: Still trying to Finish Cabinets

    Shelli,

Most of the wall hung kitchen cabinets I've seen don't have the underside finished, as it normally doesn't show. But, I suppose if one were very short they could see the bottoms of the cabinets.

You can purchase iron-on edge banding to hide the frame edges and a 1/4" plywood panel would cover the shelf bottom. I suppose you could also glue veneer on the frame sides, although that would be very tedious.

Hopefully someone else (like Dano) will have a better suggestion. Sorry I couldn't offer much advice.

RE: Still trying to Finish Cabinets

    Shelli,

As Cody said, the undersides of wall cabinets normally aren't finished for the reasons he gave. But, that really doesn't help, does it?

While edge banding with "iron on" veneer tape is an option it will be somewhat of a challenge since the cabs are on the wall; working upside down can be awkward...

The top two pics appear to me to be of the same cab over a window. If there is enough clearance between the window casing and the back you could brad nail a false bottom out of 1/4 Oak ply. The problem with this approach is that the front edge of the ply will show. To solve that problem one would need to hold it back from the front bottom edge of the cab about a half inch with a few nailing blocks flush to the bottom rail (and along the back) so that a bottom lip molding could be used to trim it out. Of course, you would want to treat all your wall cabs the same in regards to the lip molding for consistancy. Stain and finish to match (if I recollect correctly, you did the staining and finishing of the cabs so matching shouldn't present a problem).

If the bottom pic is a microwave/stove or refridgerator cab, then nothing needs to be done with the exception of venting for the stove hood or if the microvave needs to be vented. If it's over the refridge, then you would want to install the lip molding. If neither is the case, then you can take the same approach as above. That is how I'd approach this issue. FWIW.

RE: Still trying to Finish Cabinets

    Thank you Cody and Dano,

I just knew you'd put me back on track. I will try the false bottom idea that Dano suggested since I have already purchased the skins for this purpose. The lip moulding should cover the rest of the framework nicely.

The reason I am having to finish the underside of these cabinets is because I have installed short cabinets over windows and I will install short cabinet over the eating bar. They will, hopefully, give the appearance of a wall, sort of. And they will add much needed storage space. And also because I am short. HA!

Thanks again guys, You have been my Guardian Woodworking Angels in this project.

    Will keep you posted! :)

    Still trying to Finish Cabinets

    Hello Everyone,

Well, Still trying to Finish the kitchen cabinets. I have another question that hopefully you can help me with. I am trying to finish the underside of cabinets. The cabinets are solid oak on the front but pressboard on the rest of it. This leaves the pressboard showing. I purchased skins for the sides and they worked out perfectly. The problem is for the underside, the skins fit only to the inside of cabinet frame leaving the pressboard frame showing. How do I cover the frame part? Do I need to purchase some sort of vaneer (I think thats what it is called). Do they make something to fit this part of cabinet?

I'm lost and could really use your help. Again.

I have included pictures so you can tell what i'm talking about.

Thanks, I'll be anxiously waiting your response.
