    Stain is still "tacky"

I've just completed building a fish tank stand. I put 3 coats of stain on yesterday, and I let the 3rd coat sit a little too long. When I came back to wipe the excess off(maybe 5 minutes), it was too dry to wipe without leaving wipe strokes in the finish, so I decided to let it sit overnight. This morning, two of the sides are still "tacky". I was wondering if someone could suggest what I do. Let it sit for awhile longer? Is there any sanding, maybe with some really fine steal wool?, that would remove the tackiness, I was thinking this might work...I figured if it did remove the excess that I could just put on another thin coat and wipe off, just to even it out... If this is a bad idea...would letting the stand sit in my driveway to dry in the sun have any adverse affects? I should mention that it is partly cloudy, and probably about 70 F here in N. Cali today...

    WELCOME TO THE FORUM ERIC!

Oil base stain? Give it a good wipe down with mineral spirits. This should remove the excess stain that has pooled on the surface. Allow that to completely dry. Then re stain is needed or apply your finish.

thanks for the advice. Yes, it is an oil based stain, Minwax actually, red mahogany at that. And its being applied to cheap "sanded" pine plywood...if those details help any...

Clean it up with the Mineral Spirits and let us know how it comes out. If there is a problem after that we'll tackle it then.

That's one of the reasons we're here Eric! Glad it helped.
