I just bought the irwin laser guide for my dewalt miter and I installed it. I drew some stright lines and 45 deg lines with my square on a piece of 1x6 FJ pine. I adjusted the table so the straight cuts were aligned perfectly with the laser line. When I made a right 45 cut the saw was almost dead on the laser line, but than I made a left 45 cut and It was off by 1/8 of an inch at the bottum of the cut. The wood is flat against the left fence. What do you guys think?
To answer your question...
I wouldn't line the fence up with the beam of the laser, I would square the fence to the blade, or blade to the fence. The laser isn't there to draw a square line across your wood, it's there as a reference only. All you want your laser line to do it drop a mark on the wood exactly where the edge of the blade starts cutting the wood. If it's not doing that, adjust the laser, nothing else. If it's nonadjustable. return it or leave it be.

I've cut it three times and it's still too short!"

Thnx Bradthenailer, Imma try cutting the wood with the refrence lines that I drew with the square. I hope there is and adjustment for the laser cause its about 1/8 inch away from the cutting line.
Ok I addressed the laser its dead on, Now Im aligning the table. 0 deg is perfect , right 45 is great, but the left 45 is still off by an 1/8. If I adjust the table gauge again I will just screw it all up. I dont get it.
Have you tried making a 45 cut to the left? and if so, is the cut spot on 45 degrees? If so, then you have problems with the laser, if not, you have problems with the saw. Check that, and we'll go from there.
Also, could have problems with your tri-square as well.
