Custom Drawer Storage...
All:
I would like to build a tool storage chest for my "precision" marking tools and such. I have seen several plans for what I want and can adapt them to build the carcass and drawers to my specs. Of the plans I have seen, none show the drawers being lined with felt (that by itself is not the problem). I would like to customize them by having them sit in an indented outline of the tool.
I need advice on what to use, how to create the outlines and if using spray adhesive and felt "particles" has any gotchas.
I have some odd shapes to deal with, such as dial caliper and combo-square.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thx.

It's called "French Lining". This may be of some help:

RE: Custom Drawer Storage...
Never heard of it before and I think that's my solution. The article's description is probably a lot fancier than necessary but the principles and base material is what I needed to know.
Thx for the quick reply - I can take LOML with me tonight to a fabric store or to Michael's (a large crafts store here) and gain many "atta-boys" (she's a quilter - perfect match to my requirements :-) ).

Suede-Tex flocking will also give it a felt-lined look and conform to any and all surfaces. You can buy it from our sponsor and other places.

Thanks, Cody.
That Suede-Tex stuff was the product I was thinking about in my post, but the name escaped me.
Have you or anybody have any experience with it? Anything to watch out for?

RE: Custom Drawer Storage...
Somewhere in the archives there's a post I did about the stuff. I used it to line the drawer and inside the doors of a jewelry cabinet I made for LOML. I also put it on the inside of turned boxes sometimes. It works pretty good.
The flocking comes in a plastic baggie...you have a choice of colors. To apply, I also got one of those applicator thingys. It's like a big hypodermic/pepper shaker made out of cardboard.
You first seal the area to be flocked. Sanding sealer, lacquer or shellac will all work but this is a very important step...don't skip it or scrimp on it.
When the sealer is dry you apply the color matched adhesive and then "dust" the area with the flocking, using the cardboard applicator. Make sure you get complete coverage. I'd suggest you have the piece outside or have a large drop cloth to catch the excess flocking because there will be a lot.
You let it dry several hours then shake off, blow, vacuum off or otherwise remove the excess and you are done. If you got the piece sealed well and plenty of adhesive and flocking on it, it will look just like felt lining.
Hope this helps.

Cody:
Last question: Can I use a spray adhesive or do I need to use theirs?
Edit in: (Assuming the spray adhesive dries clear)

I'd use their adhesive. It's color coated so that it matches the flocking. I'm unsure how spray adhesive would work.

RE: Custom Drawer Storage...
Just another option:
I've used roll cork purchased from a hardware store. Comes in 36 inch widths, usually sold by the foot, and available in different thicknesses. I especially like it below my hand planes, easy on the irons. Never had to glue, as the weight of tools keeps it flat, and it's thick enough to not wrinkle. cuts easily with a razor knife.

RE: Custom Drawer Storage...
Thanks all for the input and ideas.
I built a 6-drawer bureau from scrap that was intended to be a self-training project and be a piece of garage furniture to test future techniques/finishes. What I will do now is to try the various ideas mentioned in this thread in each drawer to get an idea how easy/hard each one is and which one will fulfill my needs.
