a pink or baby blue dye stain??

I would like to make some pieces for my kids' rooms. I would like to use maple, or some other near white wood and dye them either a bright pink or a bright blue.

I really like the ease of dye stains, but I am not sure of where to find or how to make these colors.

Any advice is appreciated.

A quick search of our sponsor's website (Rockler) shows that they carry Transtint dyes. They are both water and alcohol soluble and you can play around with different concentrations till your heart's content. Homestead Finishing Products has a web page that shows the colors but real life will always be different so I'd suggest buying a couple that are close to what you want and practice on some scrap and note your concentrations as you move along.

I have used trantint in the past and was pleased. I do not know that I can achieve the color I want by mixing them though. I don't want super diluted red to make pink. It seems that I would have to add a near white dye to the red in order to achieve pink. I don't know where to find that.

On a side note, I found a pink dye made by lockwood but I don't know how bright it it.

I have on occasion used RIT fabric dye, for fabrics, but will work on wood also. It comes as a liquid or a powder that you can mix your own strength. It's available at grocery stores, fabric stores, KMart, Target, etc. Here is their [link:www.ritdye.com/Color+Chart.4.lasso|color chart].

I was wondering about RIT dyes for wood. Is water the only solvent I can use, or would alcohol or some other solvent work?

I've seen pics of turned pieces that were dyed with RIT dye. They looked great. I'm not sure about the mixing agent used.

It's not dye, but just to throw another option out there: milk paint. It will color the wood, but I think a conservative coat will still let the wood grain show through.

Thanks for the replies y'all. It looks like i am not going to find a bright pink dye stain. IT muct be difficult or not worth the effort(no market?) to make such bright colors.

I did see and use a flourescent deer huntin orange dye stainmade be gemini one time, but I cannot find anything that bright in the colors I seek.

Oh well.....maybe purple then. Transtint's purple is pretty bright.
