RE: Tabletop clips
Since they have a 3/8" offset, I would say a hair or two more than 3/8" for the distance from the top of the skirt. As to depth, anything from 3/4 to the full length of the tab that slides into the kerf would be fine.

As you can see from the picture, like Jerry said, the top edge of the kerf should be slightly more than the offset, so that when the clip is tightened, there will be pressure pulling the top down. I would install those by hand.

RE: Tabletop clips
Mick,
The advice given above is very good. As for the depth of kerf... I would use the shallowest of the following: Half the thickness of the apron or just deep enough so that the diagonal part of the clip does not rub on the sides of the kerf.
Personally, I prefer the figure "8" style of clip. With 3/4" screws there seems to be a more solid 'feel' to the attachment of the table top. But that's just me...

RE: Tabletop clips
Only thing I could add is I cut the groove for them to fit into with my biscuit jointer. Barry

RE: Tabletop clips
I don't think I've seen or heard of the "figure 8" clips.
Can you send me a link?

RE: Tabletop clips
you need to cut a small relief in the top of the apron (forstner works well) and screw it in, then the tab sticking into the void underneath . . . and you screw up into the top.
Especially useful if you have a thinner strip over a wide drawer in a table.

RE: Tabletop clips
As movement occurs the figure 8 will rotate on the end connected to the skirt.

RE: Tabletop clips
I too use the biscuit joiner for this because it weakens the aprons less than a full length groove does.
Measure once... cut twice.
