New To Me
I learned something yesterday...imagine that, huh?
Anyway, I was raising some panels on the router table for an outdoor planter I was making from Cypress. My panel raising bit doesn't have a backcutter but to keep the panel face flush with the rails and stiles, I have been backcutting with a dado blade in the tablesaw. This worked well but required changing the saw blade to a dado cutter and then back again. Invariably, I'd also need to cut something on the TS when the dado was installed, too.
So, yesterday, after raising the panels, I simply lowered the bit in the router table to where only the 3/8" lip cutter portion was above the insert. Then I ran the panels through with the backside down, gradually raising the bit after each pass until I had a lip that would insert easily into the 1/4" grooves in the rails and stiles.
It not only backcut the panels but left a chamfered edge instead of a square one where the backcut stopped.
This may be old hat to everyone else but I just discovered it on my own. Works great and no bit changing or blade changing required.

RE: New To Me
Good tip!
Does the chamfer make it a possible problem leveraging the dado lip into splitting?

Ahh... now I see... I was thinking the lip (tenon) itself was tapered..
Cool idea!

RE: New To Me
Yep, that looks like it'd get the job done. One of the reasons I don't use a dado set much is that it is a PITA to switch it in and out, and like you said, there always seems to be some other cut that needs to be made every time the stack is set up.

RE: New To Me
Sonny ol' buddy,
I'm gonna make it out to Californicate one of these days and visit you. I figure we can solve all the worlds problems in one long evening discussion. It will be a hoot. :)

RE: New To Me
I'd absolutely Love that!
I would have to insist you be our guest and bunk at our house!
Why, I dare say there would be two red dots in California on that night!

RE: New To Me
I have a sneaking suspicion I'd not be invited as a third. ;)
