Do I need a primer when using pigmented lacquer with MDF?

Do I need a primer when using pigmented lacquer with MDF?

My theory is, no. If I was spraying clear lacquer on wood or mdf or whatever, obviously I wouldn't use a primer.

I did a basic test with some lacquer-based primer that I had (in a spray can) and I didn't see any particular differences in adhesion. I don't need the filling abilities of a primer for this, because I've filled the edges already with sort of a plastic-wood filler.

While we're on the subject, does anyone make a pigmentable lacquer that can take deep/dark colors? I ended up going a little pastel for this project because sherwin williams pigmentable lacquer has so much white in it that you can't tint it very dark.

I think if I were you I'd at least hit it with a 1-lb cut of shellac, just in case, just as I would with a lacquer clearcoat.

Insurance is cheap. A failed finish doesn't sit very well.

It's quite possible that it'd be OK with no interfacing at all... but I'd hesitate to advocate that until I'd seen something lacquered - without - shellac that's STAYED lacquered for fifty years.

OK, fair enough. I have some shellac sitting around.

You could ask the paint store. Major brand paint stores know their product and can tell you what you need to know.

ML Campbell does make tintable lacquer and I have used alot of it. They show that they can tint it to over 800 colors.

On the primer, I use it on evrything that I intend to paint and ML Campbell as an example also recommends it.
