    RE: Carpenter's hammer question

Might be easier to buy one for a pattern.

    RE: Carpenter's hammer question

Yep. Probably right but before I buy one I'll try to build my own. Nothing to mess up but a broken shovel handle. Grizzley has them for even cheaper...

    RE: Carpenter's hammer question

Ya know, as far as that face angle goes, draw an imaginary line from the butt of the handle across the block of the head.
See how there is a correlation?
For making one yourself, that would get you in the ballpark, if not right on the pitchers mound.
And it would be fun and a satisfying project as well. Practical for decades to come. ;)

    RE: Carpenter's hammer question

I've made several of those over the years. For the one pictured the impact surface that is parallel with the grip as in claw, rip and framing hammers is effective and comfortable. The angle for striking surfaces for mallets, used for carving, can vary to personal taste.

    RE: Carpenter's hammer question

Well, you've got tha angle. Enlarge and print Sonny's link and measure the angle. If you know the length you've got yourself a pattern for making it too. I'm sure a number of mags...rags?...have published plans for making it. Shopnotes should be a good one.

Trust your instincts and do it from your own plan. That angle is dependent on how you swing and the length of your arm, no? If you are 6'5" and I am 5'10" we are not going to hit with that thing the same, I would think.

    RE: Carpenter's hammer question

I was thinking about building my own bench hammer simular to
the attached picture. Has anyone done this or have one
they've purchased. I would like to know the angle of the
face. I have a broken ash shovel handle to cut down and use
as a handle and a 4/4 chunk of ash to fabricate the head
    from. Any advise is appreciated.
    Scott

As has already been pointed out, your own height, the height of your bench and the length of the handle all determine the optimum angle of the hammer face. But, it isn't rocket science, either. Just estimate the angle. Unless you are standing at that bench carving for hours at a time, it probably won't matter if it's a few degrees off.

You're right. Just gonna make one and if it ain't right, 60 seconds at the band saw starts anew.
