Generally, the material is 3/4" melamine over particle board, one side melamine and one side gator (paper) backed. The back is 1/4" melamine, double side faced. (The single side faced is usually vinyl.) And the 1/4" is over MDF not particle board.
As I said it is not the only way but it works very well for face frame cabinets.
