Some years ago I was planing an end grain cutting board. The rotating knives struck the leading edge of the board with such force that it came flying out backwards, breaking several bones in my left hand. I now make a point of gluing sacrificial runners to both sides of the board, as shown in the sketch above. Such runners have the added advantage that they are a sure way to eliminate snipe. - Paul Mueller, Oakland, California
